CITY OF WADENA: Hiring List Paid on Call Firefighters

City of Wadena issued the following announcement on Oct. 21.

The Wadena Fire Department is accepting applications for Paid on Call Firefighters. Applications will be used to develop a hiring list to fill future firefighter vacancies. Applications can be obtained by visiting City Hall at 222 Colfax Ave SE from 8am until 4:30pm or online at www.wadena.org under the employment tab. Applications shall be submitted to the City Administrator by mail or by dropping off at City Hall.

SUMMARY:

Save lives and property by providing the community with fire suppression, emergency services, when called upon, and public fire safety education, and will provide these services to the best of their ability and in a professional manner.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION:

Responds to emergency incidents when called upon. Participates in fire prevention and safety education activities as assigned. Participates in drills, and other required training activities and meets minimum participation and competency requirements. Participates in station and apparatus maintenance activities. Serves on standby crew as assigned.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

1. Education and Experience

▪ High school diploma or GED equivalent

▪ Must be at least 18 years of age

▪ Must possess a valid Minnesota Drivers License

▪ Must pass background investigation, physical examination, and physical ability test

▪ Must be able to follow traffic laws and arrive at the intersection of Highway #10 and #71 within (5) five minutes of getting an emergency call

▪ Shall have completed Firefighter 1 training or the equivalent Fire Department, State, and NFPA training or have the ability to complete and pass the training within one year of hire as a probationary member

▪ Basic computer skills and software knowledge

▪ Must make (65%) of all emergency calls, (65%) of meetings and also must make (65%) of regular drills

2. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

▪ Considerable knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of Department

▪ Considerable knowledge of the rules and regulations of the Department, geography of the service contract area, and the location of roadways, principal buildings, and fire hydrants

▪ Considerable knowledge of the principles, practices, procedures, and equipment used in fire fighting and in the protection of life and property from fire

▪ Considerable knowledge of the uses and limitations of the various types of apparatus and equipment used by the Department, and of their operational and maintenance requirements

▪ Considerable ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear.  The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; run; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl; push and pull; twist and turn; and taste or smell.

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, night vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions.  The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, infectious diseases, and vibration.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.  

KNOWLEDGE OF:

▪ Operations, services and activities of the Wadena Fire Department

▪ Principles, practices, and methods of comprehensive fire suppression, prevention, and other emergency services.

ABILITY TO:

▪ Operate equipment, which includes but is not limited to hand tools, power tools, light and heavy equipment, and fire pumps.  Operate all fire department vehicles including fire apparatus.

▪ Perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division necessary for response to fire, rescue, medical emergency, and hazardous materials incidents.

▪ Read fire protection textbooks, and hazardous materials emergency response textbooks.

▪ Communicate effectively  orally and in writing.  Must clearly speak the English language, as well as have full comprehension of the English language.

▪ Interpret instructions and use logic to solve concrete problems.

▪ Perform all physical duties normally expected of a firefighter.  Shall meet minimum medical requirements as established  by the fire department physician and shall comply with OSHA respirator requirements on an annual basis

▪ Work as a member of a team under stress caused by emergencies, danger, or criticism.  Make reasonable decisions regarding the safety of team members and his/her own self.  Work under limited supervision in stressful situations.

▪ Present a positive, constructive image and attitude in the performance of firefighter duties.  Establish positive working relationships with the public, City staff, fire personnel, and other agencies.
