Rep. John Poston told his constituents that he would be voting to end Gov. Tim Walz's peacetime emergency declaration.
This is the main focus of the special session, to decide upon whether the governor's emergency powers should be extended for another 30 days.
Poston said this is the longest time residents have been under a peacetime state of emergency since World War II. The governor's approach has devastated the state's economy and failed to protect the most vulnerable Minnesotans. Poston said it is time to "end his unilateral powers, and work with the legislature to respond to the pandemic and protect those in long-term care and nursing facilities."
Other topics that may be discussed during the special session include taxes, COVID response, distribution of CARES Act funds, changes to emergency powers, police reform and bonding. Poston said he would support CARES Act funding so that federal funds could be directed to communities to help them recover from forced COVID-19 closures.
