The Minnesota Department of Transportation has announced that winter load increases began on Dec. 21, with unhindered state highways in the north frost territory.
Residents can locate a MnDOT load limits map on the MnDOT website.
Vehicles can run up to 10% over the official legal maximum loads on unhindered highways during the winter load increase term. However, trucks still have to submit to registered weight laws and not go over registered gross weight limits. Drivers need to check with town law enforcement before adding any weights on city, county and township highways.
A permit to progress winter weight is needed to take advantage of the 10% weight increase on interstate highways only. Moreover, a permit is not needed for state trunk highways.
For residents who have questions about over legal weight/size “heavy haul” trucking, contact MnDOT by calling 651-296-6000 or emailing ofcvopermits.dot@state.mn.us.
Residents who have enforcement, questions can call the Minnesota Department of Public Safety - State Patrol - Commercial Vehicle Enforcement at 651-350-2000.
