Since 2017, the City of Wadena has been pursuing a quiet zone for trains that roll through the municipal area.
Last week, Wadena County Commissioners took another step toward that train horn free zone by approving funding for safety features that have to be implemented, the Wadena Pioneer Journal reported.
Those safety features include a railroad crossing for vehicles and pedestrians and also building easements along the track. One of the features is to alert those by the tracks of an incoming train without the usual train whistle.
Wadena County Coordinator Ryan Odden said the projects are eligible for state aid and estimates costs to be around $100,000.
The Wadena Pioneer Journal specifically detailed the reconstruction projects.
One of the projects will be on Highway 10 where safety features will be added to the Highway 71 and Second Street SW crossing. Those safety measures include driveway closures and concrete medians. The newspaper also reported that the First Street SE crossing needs concrete median and driveway closures as well.
