Minnesota Republican leaders introduced their plan to re-purpose the state's $1.5 billion dollar surplus.

Although a surplus was expected and is a sign that the economy continues to do well, this also means that the state government is collecting more money than it needs to and has overcharged Minnesotans.

Senate Republicans agree that $1 billion of the $1.5 billion dollar surplus should go back to taxpayers in the form of tax relief. Tax relief would primarily target seniors, college graduates, business owners, farmers and families with childcare costs. Their plan would also eliminate social security taxes entirely.

According to the Republican Minnesota legislation, Republican House leader Rep. Greg Davids spoke on the surplus and what it should be used for.

"With a $1.5 billion surplus, the question should not be whether to have a tax cut bill, it should be how much that tax cut bill will be," Davids said. “House and Senate Republicans are united in our work to cut taxes for families, and put the surplus back in the hands of Minnesotans. We challenge Gov. Walz and House Democrats to be clear with Minnesotans how much tax relief they are willing to provide this session.”
