Sen. Paul Utke recently shared a video from the Minnesota Senate Republican Caucus that focuses on child labor in mining activities in Bolivia.
These individuals work in dangerous areas where the tunnels are extremely narrow, and those narrow spaces are where mining companies use children to retrieve the minerals. The video quotes children as saying that there’s no one else to help the family, and that they work there to support their families.
The video from VICE News Tonight shows how children are involved in mining in Bolivia, and that there’s progress to be made in regulating the number of children who work in the mines. He said they have no control over mining activities.
In Minnesota, the law does not allow the use of child labor, and in sharing the video, Utke seems to imply that regulated and environmentally friendly mining in Minnesota could mean fewer child laborers working in extremely dangerous situations.
